Post Conference Report

Our state's L1brar1an conference took place in Long Beach this weekend -

The LBC viewed from the steps of the convention center.

And look at all this free promotional loot I got from the vendor's exhibition hall -

I now have a shitload of free promotional pens, some of which light up. I think I'll have to make up a "Virtual L1brarian Conference" kit and mail it to Boz. There is no way I can ever use all these pens.

The highlight for me was hearing the delightful Ms. Lee Curtis speak. She came across as a very down-to-earth lady, which was an unexpected surprise. I was so close, I could have groped her if I wanted to.

JLC in the LBC.
"There aren't any kids here"?
"So I can swear"?

Then there was Craig from Craigslist, who was promoting wrist awareness with his Stephen Colbert Wrist Stong bracelet -

Craig's Wrist.

Oh! And during a lull on Saturday afternoon, we wandered over to the Long Beach Aquarium and watched divers carve pumpkins under water -

Underwater Pumpkin Carving.

Pretty cool for a conference.

What I Did To Harass A Bunch Of Boy Scouts...

The weekend of Oct. 12/14th I was on the campus of Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne, where our intrepid RLB once harassed the library staff, and participated in a Boy Scout Camporee. And I didn't camp there, I just drove over and helped out. (I live 1 1/2 miles from this place, why the fuck should I camp???)

What you're looking at is a live Internet broadcast studio. The boys ran the cameras, and I helped with the camera switching. (I'm under the red arrow, in the red hat. As usual.) As far as I know it went well. We were ahead of the game, in fact...this was done over a WIRELESS connection. So them Boy Scouts bring everything camping. Except hot women. Send belle next time.

Where Were You When You Heard About Fawn...

A radio station here in the Fort (a station that rose out of the ashes of the old stations that knocked it off the air in the first place...ah, love that consolidation) held their Fawn Liebowitz golf tournament 2 weekends ago. Some guy that must be a hardcore Animal House fan brought this to the outing.
Kinda wish I had this to take on job interviews...

Did Somebody Say "Teen Poem"?

Here's a poem you could get up and read Jonnie.
And I've kept it clean.
This is a Midwest point of view type of poem, and should be read in a South Whitley accent.

"I need something to hide my face
Because you make it break out bad
I get wiggly in the feet when I see you
Because you work in the feed mill with my dad
Daddy says you could make a man of me
If I went back to your trailer
And Daddy says he'd be proud of me
When and if I save ya
Mama says she'd disown me
If I dirty you up and nail ya
So I have to hide my lust in a burlap bag
That is why I took ya
Back to the creek outside of town
And used a switch to flail ya
Now lay quiet while I dig the grave
Where you'll forever sleep
But damn this cheap ol' coffee can
The hole won't be that deep."

Read it live it sounds better.

Am I too late for the comic book swap?

They had tons ... tons ... I mean tons ... of comic books at the indoor flea market in Oscoda.

[Click pic for full sized goodness]

At an excellent price too.
Fifty cents each or three for a dollar, and they are pristine, I guess, because they are in plastic bags, and they look new, but it doesn't matter, because I'll be taking them out to read, because that's what comic books are for ... READING.

I almost bought the unauthorized comic book biography of Malcolm X, but it looked kind of like you had to think if you read it.

My Former Chinese Wrestler Fan

I picked this fan up a few years ago in L.A.'s Chinatown. It features, like, 250 famous Chinese wrestlers and has been on display more or less constantly since 2003.

[ Click to view larger image.]

I began using it as a grill fan a couple of weeks ago, which led to its rapid deterioration. Here is how it looks as of Monday's Columbus Day feast -

R.I.P.

I just wanted to report it's demise.

Our Columbus Day feast came out perfectly ok though, due to the fan capabilities of an old magazine.

Fiercely Raining

I haven't made a Donald Kilbuck post in a long time, so I thought I'd transcribe a recent voicemail he left on my cell phone:

Hi Jon.
Donald.
It's raining up here.
It's fierce!
Fiercely raining!
Or is it calm?
[ pause ]
OK. It's calm.
OK. The leaves aren't blowing.
OK. Bye.

Current Events

Well, if anybody was concerned, you'll be glad to hear my wiki presentation went fine (and in my mind, you're all very very very concerned). Since I was showing how a wiki worked, I was talking while seated behind a computer which was having its display projected onto a wall. So nobody was looking directly at me and I wasn't standing, so everything was fine. If I were standing and everybody was looking at me, I would have been fidgety and probably would have blacked out. As it worked out though, I did fine. When I projected our branch wiki onto the wall, I was surprised to see my co-worker, Sarah, had added a huge comment to the top of the main page, so everybody viewing the presentation saw, "Yay for Jon showing everyone the cool world of WIKI. Rock on Jon!" in a large bold red font. That kind of broke the ice.

Aside from that, it's all about the upcoming public C0M1C BOOK SWAP -

C0M1C SWAP Flier.

Yesterday, I delivered a stack of fliers to a local comics store to publicize the event -

RLB - "I'm gonna publicize this"!

Aside from that, Sandra & I attended a clandestine party which was made up almost entirely of employees who had been fired from or quit my former workplace. The management there is apparently crazy, and all the people I liked are being canned in favor of kiss-asses.

I've never seen a group of former employees so happy about moving on, it was more like a celebration than anything else. I never saw anything like it before.

Guests of Honor, A&A - glad to be moving on.

What else is going on?

In anticipation of the upcoming C0M1C SWAP, I've been occassionally wearing a Naruto mask at work -

RLB as manga sensation, Naruto.

My co-worker prefers to wear the mask kind of sideways so she can read -

Sideways Naruto.

I hope SOMEBODY shows up at the swap. At least two people, so they can actually swap. If that happens, I will consider the event a success.
